FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ARRIVAL

✣ WELCOME TO SALTBURNT ✣

Your character wakes up in bed, in the mansion, with a few sparse and hazy memories of their arrival into Saltburnt, so vague and patchy that it's a wonder if they're remembering anything more than a half-baked dream. Whatever your character might've brought with them luggage wise has been unpacked and hung in the closets of their room, though anything of particular note has gone suspiciously missing (weapons, items, anything scandalous), leaving your character with their clothes, pushed to the back and out of sight, with a few more appropriate hand-me-downs sitting generously front and center for them to wear. Which they should, as they go about life in Saltburnt. Breakfast is self-serve, lunch is fend for yourself, and dinner is black tie. Participate in family time with the Balfours if you like, take advantage of the sprawling estate, the horse stables, the lake, the maze. Live your life to the fullest! While you can.

OOC MECHANICS

β†’ HOW TO JOIN:
This is a closed, private game, with a player cap of 50 people. To join, you must be invited by a mod. Anyone is free to comment around the TDM and play in the setting, but the number of invites will be limited until the game is better established. If in the future we open up invite requests, this will be updated.

β†’ WHO CAN I APP?
APPABLENONAPPABLE

  • Canon characters
  • Original Characters
  • CRAU
  • Nonhuman Characters*
  • Characters with powers**

  • Canon AU Characters
  • Duplicate Characters
  • Original Characters from Established Canons
  • Silent Protagonists
  • Characters under 16
  • Aged-up characters
* Nonhuman characters will permanently retain a humanoid figure. If that option is not applicable to a specific character, the character will not be allowed in game.
** Characters with game breaking powers will be nerfed at the player’s discretion. If that option is not applicable to a specific character, the character will not be allowed in game.

Players can have a total of 3 characters in game, with no limit to how many can be apped in one app round. More character slots can be earned through in game participation (see: REWARDS SYSTEM). IC powers in general will not be nerfed, unless it breaks the game, in which case we trust you to know what is acceptable or not.

β†’ WHAT IS THE GAME PACE?
The first weekend of every month is the event drop. We switch every month between a public TDM and a private event. Players can submit event ideas and themes HERE, or if there are no submissions, the mod will come up with one. Events will generally switch from smut/positive to horror/negative on a month by month basis, but there are usually little hints of both in every post.

β†’ MY CHARACTER NEEDS SOMETHING TO SURVIVE.
The house is happy to provide whatever they need. For example, a vampire character who requires blood to survive will have it on the nightly menus β€”Β medication and disability devices will work in similar ways.

β†’ WHAT IS ACTIVITY?
Activity is check-in + summary, and will run the last week of the month. See more about activity checks HERE.

β†’ WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CHARACTER WHEN I DROP?
Your character will be escorted out of the house shamefully, under the cover of night. It's up to you whether their expulsion is deserved, essentially if they'd rather go out with a bang or with false charges brought against them. In either case, the manor has a short term memory, and reapps are possible regardless of how you choose to drop.

β†’ WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CHARACTER WHEN I HIATUS?
Up to player choice. Either a coma keeps your character bedridden for the length of your hiatus, or, as is the option with dropping, you can choose to have you character do something that gets them kicked out for the length of your hiatus, and then welcomed back in after that penance.

β†’ HOW DO I CANON UPDATE?
Canon updates are at the discretion of the player β€” you don't need to submit for one, you can just do it at your own pace. Characters go comatose for a time, and wake up with their new memories.

β†’ WHAT IS THE REWARDS SYSTEM?
Both IC and OOC rewards can be won through in game participation. You can read more specifics about it on the REWARDS page.

IC MECHANICS

β†’ IS THERE A NETWORK?
Welcome to the first gen iPhone. It has all the regular features of an iPhone, along with a Saltburnt-wide network for open posting. While it is fully functional for calls, texts, video calls, and apps, the Wi-Fi and reception in the house can be pretty spotty, so anyone you try to communicate with outside of the house probably won’t receive it. So sad!

In addition, there is a standard app installed on every phone called VOYEUR that essentially works as a data collective of anything the house staff might note about your character: e.g., anything scandalous about their past, anything strange they brought with them to the mansion, voyeuristic photos of them doing unsavory acts, or any gossip worthy behaviors. These accounts are public but unsearchable, and only accessible from swiping left or right on people. To summarize, it's a dating app for stalkers.

β†’ WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN SALTBURNT?
Life is very much what you'll make it in Saltburnt. Most things are taken care of by a predominately invisible staff, leaving your character free to experience a life of privilege and luxury as they like. Some may take well to a lack of responsibility, others might feel the need to occupy their time with manual labor. However they decide to involve themselves with the setting, your character will always have the distinct impression they are being watched. Messes they make will be cleaned up when they aren't watching β€” private conversations have a way of ending up catalogued on the VOYEUR app. Laziness and hyperactivity are both equally worthy of critique in the eyes of the Balfours, so there's no real winning with them.

β†’ HOW DOES SALTBURNT FUNCTION?
On paper it is a normal, overlarge and extremely expensive mansion, that runs like any other castle would run β€”Β with a house staff, and a lot of invisible upkeep going on behind the curtains, that guests and owners generally don't worry about. In practice, there does seem to be something more supernatural to the house, like it's constantly in a state of flux β€”Β rooms never exactly where you remember them, new rooms popping up seemingly right when you need them, a feeling that "the walls have ears" is a bit more literal in Saltburnt than anywhere else.

β†’ MY CHARACTER ICLY WANTS TO LEAVE.
There's nothing stopping your character from hopping the outlining fence of the estate and leaving. Except, once they're outside it, there's a foreboding sense of paranoia, fear, and disgust that settles into them β€”Β shouldn't you stay? Don't you want to? Regardless of how your character fairs through discomfort and sickness, eventually they will succumb to unconsciousness, where eventually they will wake up back safely inside their bed in the manor. Silly, you must've gotten lost. Multiple attempts to leave have the potential to result in harsher punishments, assigned by the mods.

β†’ CAN MY CHARACTER DIE?
Short answer: yes! Long answer: read more about the death mechanic HERE.

β†’ MY CHARACTER WANTS TO BEFRIEND AN NPC
Due to the involvement required from the mod team at the front, it is only available to you in the form of a reward, given from plot involvement. You can read up on that HERE.

β†’ WHAT IS THE LIBRARY?
Essentially, the Library is the heart and soul of Saltburnt, as well as being a fun OOC system for dispensing interesting/sentimental items. You can read more about it on the SETTINGS page.

Hey guys! Regarding character gift-giving, since the season is coming up and there's the Secret Santa - are there ways to purchase things? Sorry if this is such a stupid question, but I'm not sure how far the "everything is provided" option extends, or if there's fake-shopping just for fun (Guests given gift cards for online shopping services? A museum gift store inexplicably on the third floor?) I'm thinking things that are very specific and personal, as the best gifts are, i.e. monogrammed handkerchiefs, a wine from someone's birth year, a signed first edition of a book, a human skull. Or that people might not think to get until they see it i.e. a tamagotchi, a stuffed bear in a little suit, a tshirt that says "got milk".

    My current understanding is:
    - If it's something typically seen in the setting (ala Saltburn film decor) or required for one of the player-created rooms to work, it is present in the house: food in the kitchen, alcohol at the bar, fancy clothes in the closet, dvds in the film room, drugs in the drug room, bandaids in the clinic, etc. But these items don't strictly belong to guests, they just have the use of them.
    - The service staff NPCs can be asked to fetch this kind of stuff and they'll try to accomodate and we don't need to chat with you guys. (E.g. outfits for parties.)
    - Characters can have some personal items from home (ie outfit, watch and glasses, journal) but requesting weapons, pets, etc, is an event reward/plot coin.
    - Specific and sometimes personal extra stuff can be requested from the library but it's a mod process and a crapshoot and mostly for fun silly things like the kitty ears.

I know and appreciate that you don't hard police this stuff! But for Xmas-adjacent stuff specifically I love coming up with IC gifts and I also don't want to make dumb mistakes or leave 100 library requests/FAQ questions when it's your holidays too.

god this is so many words kill me tbh.

Quick question that I think I already know the answer to. But it doesn't hurt to play it safe!

Would a bite from a werewolf be able to turn someone else? (Obviously with player agreement and pre-planning)

    Morning, mods.

I know weapons are removed upon arrival. If someone was to try and find their weapon through tracking means or the likes, what would they sense? Are the weapons left back home, or squirreled away?

hello mods! a question about apps and casts!

i'm considering apping another asoiaf character (from the game of thrones tv series), but i already have aemond in the game. would the timeline separation between HOTD and GOT count them as separate canons or do they fall under one canon, and if it's the latter, can we app/play two characters from the same canon or franchise?

    hello mods, super quick q!!

we have had someone who could transform into a dragon before (rip zoya queen) but is there a particular size limit to transformations? like rather than being "full size" the magic of the house shrinks them a wee bit?

sometimes you want to polymorph into a dragon for your bf's valentine's, you know.

hi mods! this is fairly character-specific/not a particularly general faq question so if there's a better place for this to go, please let me know, BUT: eunhyuk has just begun studying both silco and jinx to attempt to replicate the shimmer doses silco typically takes for his eye (since shimmer is not provided by the house outright iirc?) β€” how far would he be able to get? considering that shimmer is a regenerative/mutative substance i assume some kind of plot coin-ery would be necessary for a one-to-one recreation but would eunhyuk at least be able to come up with an equivalent as far as stemming silco's infection is concerned? thank you, and apologies if i've misunderstood anything!

Hi mods! Question I left on the current TDM led me to wonder what would happen in general if Zephir went around leaving some of his weird light/dark substance (app here) around certain places in Saltburn to see if it messes with its magic - namely the library, otherworld, the meat room, the remembrance pool, etc. He's already messed with the altar in a previous TDM but he is not above trying his luck again.

Also, he's been stealing little plant-seeds off the insides of PCs in game for a few months now to grow a little garden of freaky-looking plants in his room. Would he be able to do the same to some of the NPCs? (cw: gore + nsfw) The process is really agonizing and pretty gore-y, and he tends to do it in sexual contexts because he's an extra freak about it. I can be more specific if needed.

    Thank you!

hello mods, cannot believe i'm back to playing this asshole but plus Γ§a change and all that!!

anyway, my incredibly niche question: i would like to take damon from a point in time where he's in the slow and painful process of dying from a werewolf bite, and i have a player interested in playing his brother stefan who'd we'd like to force damon to take the cure(tm) for vampirismβ€”the problem is, at the point that they're most interested in playing stefan from (and i'm most interested in playing against!) stefan wouldn't have access to the cure. he knows what it is, that it exists, and that his ex ate it and it's gone now. is there any dwrp game timey-wimey handwaving that can let stefan wake up to the cure in his luggage?

failing timey-wimey handwaving, would it be allowed to say salt is slowing the progression of the werewolf venom until one of us can earn an item from home? or some secret third thing that lets me have my cake and eat it too??
