FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ARRIVAL
OOC MECHANICS
β HOW TO JOIN:
This is a closed, private game, with a player cap of 50 people. To join, you must be invited by a mod. Anyone is free to comment around the TDM and play in the setting, but the number of invites will be limited until the game is better established. If in the future we open up invite requests, this will be updated.
β WHO CAN I APP?
* Nonhuman characters will permanently retain a humanoid figure. If that option is not applicable to a specific character, the character will not be allowed in game.
** Characters with game breaking powers will be nerfed at the playerβs discretion. If that option is not applicable to a specific character, the character will not be allowed in game.
Players can have a total of 3 characters in game, with no limit to how many can be apped in one app round. More character slots can be earned through in game participation (see: REWARDS SYSTEM). IC powers in general will not be nerfed, unless it breaks the game, in which case we trust you to know what is acceptable or not.
β WHAT IS THE GAME PACE?
The first weekend of every month is the event drop. We switch every month between a public TDM and a private event. Players can submit event ideas and themes HERE, or if there are no submissions, the mod will come up with one. Events will generally switch from smut/positive to horror/negative on a month by month basis, but there are usually little hints of both in every post.
β MY CHARACTER NEEDS SOMETHING TO SURVIVE.
The house is happy to provide whatever they need. For example, a vampire character who requires blood to survive will have it on the nightly menus βΒ medication and disability devices will work in similar ways.
β WHAT IS ACTIVITY?
Activity is check-in + summary, and will run the last week of the month. See more about activity checks HERE.
β WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CHARACTER WHEN I DROP?
Your character will be escorted out of the house shamefully, under the cover of night. It's up to you whether their expulsion is deserved, essentially if they'd rather go out with a bang or with false charges brought against them. In either case, the manor has a short term memory, and reapps are possible regardless of how you choose to drop.
β WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CHARACTER WHEN I HIATUS?
Up to player choice. Either a coma keeps your character bedridden for the length of your hiatus, or, as is the option with dropping, you can choose to have you character do something that gets them kicked out for the length of your hiatus, and then welcomed back in after that penance.
β HOW DO I CANON UPDATE?
Canon updates are at the discretion of the player β you don't need to submit for one, you can just do it at your own pace. Characters go comatose for a time, and wake up with their new memories.
β WHAT IS THE REWARDS SYSTEM?
Both IC and OOC rewards can be won through in game participation. You can read more specifics about it on the REWARDS page.

IC MECHANICS
β IS THERE A NETWORK?
Welcome to the first gen iPhone. It has all the regular features of an iPhone, along with a Saltburnt-wide network for open posting. While it is fully functional for calls, texts, video calls, and apps, the Wi-Fi and reception in the house can be pretty spotty, so anyone you try to communicate with outside of the house probably wonβt receive it. So sad!
In addition, there is a standard app installed on every phone called VOYEUR that essentially works as a data collective of anything the house staff might note about your character: e.g., anything scandalous about their past, anything strange they brought with them to the mansion, voyeuristic photos of them doing unsavory acts, or any gossip worthy behaviors. These accounts are public but unsearchable, and only accessible from swiping left or right on people. To summarize, it's a dating app for stalkers.
β WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN SALTBURNT?
Life is very much what you'll make it in Saltburnt. Most things are taken care of by a predominately invisible staff, leaving your character free to experience a life of privilege and luxury as they like. Some may take well to a lack of responsibility, others might feel the need to occupy their time with manual labor. However they decide to involve themselves with the setting, your character will always have the distinct impression they are being watched. Messes they make will be cleaned up when they aren't watching β private conversations have a way of ending up catalogued on the VOYEUR app. Laziness and hyperactivity are both equally worthy of critique in the eyes of the Balfours, so there's no real winning with them.
β HOW DOES SALTBURNT FUNCTION?
On paper it is a normal, overlarge and extremely expensive mansion, that runs like any other castle would run βΒ with a house staff, and a lot of invisible upkeep going on behind the curtains, that guests and owners generally don't worry about. In practice, there does seem to be something more supernatural to the house, like it's constantly in a state of flux βΒ rooms never exactly where you remember them, new rooms popping up seemingly right when you need them, a feeling that "the walls have ears" is a bit more literal in Saltburnt than anywhere else.
β MY CHARACTER ICLY WANTS TO LEAVE.
There's nothing stopping your character from hopping the outlining fence of the estate and leaving. Except, once they're outside it, there's a foreboding sense of paranoia, fear, and disgust that settles into them βΒ shouldn't you stay? Don't you want to? Regardless of how your character fairs through discomfort and sickness, eventually they will succumb to unconsciousness, where eventually they will wake up back safely inside their bed in the manor. Silly, you must've gotten lost. Multiple attempts to leave have the potential to result in harsher punishments, assigned by the mods.
β CAN MY CHARACTER DIE?
Short answer: yes! Long answer: read more about the death mechanic HERE.
β MY CHARACTER WANTS TO BEFRIEND AN NPC
Due to the involvement required from the mod team at the front, it is only available to you in the form of a reward, given from plot involvement. You can read up on that HERE.
β WHAT IS THE LIBRARY?
Essentially, the Library is the heart and soul of Saltburnt, as well as being a fun OOC system for dispensing interesting/sentimental items. You can read more about it on the SETTINGS page.

Plotty inquiry!
Tactics Matt would employ include:
Idk how this might overlap with October events, but uhhh tl;dr: What might happen if Matt tried to do a seance?
no subject
As Matt looks around the manor, independent from the knowing cannibalistic feasts, nothing much pings his senses as transmogrified. That is to say βΒ so much of the manor is deeply magical, it's a little like trying to pinpoint a whisper from across the room at a rock concert. Matt does get the sense that whatever force is keeping people locked inside is also effecting his magic inside. Whatever it is, it doesn't want to be found, and if provoked will send Matt on a merry goose chase that will ultimately lead nowhere. He fails at finding wherever the force stems from, always somewhat befuddled by where he ends up.
What isn't hard to determine, is that the estate is rife with ghosts. A spirit board will be very vocal, seances will never be dull. You can take the reigns on whatever ghosts Matt comes into contact with β from old Balfour family members who died of cholera, to young maids who were politely disposed of after, cough, rigorous activities with the man of the manor at the time (and, subsequently, his wife). As for asking the spirits involved in the cake/gourd variety, oddly enough, Matt will find that none of them actually believe themselves to be dead. The question "how did you die?" is met with "but I'm alive?" to no end. Of course, if he digs a little deeper, he'll find that being their version of alive is a little bit like endless torture, hence the screaming he encountered with his cake scry. Potentially, Matt will want to help the souls, because he's a good boy. Luckily, there is a solution(ish)!
Allowing the souls to possess him does give them a little reprieve. Of course, they don't really want to give up control of Matt's body, so it's a push and pull whenever/if he ever chooses to do it. In particular, a ghost named PARIS is taken with him. Paris was a guest in the manor βΒ in fact, the cousin and good friend of Bunny Balfour, who invited him to Saltburnt for their first summer vacation in university. Paris, you might say, was deeply in love with Bunny, who found his attraction very flattering, but also kind of gross, dude, stop. Anyway, when pried about his death, Paris will admit he went into the maze following Bunny one night, hoping for a sordid meet up among the greenery. However, he felt an eerie impulse inside the maze, like someone was watching or following him. A little scared, he started to run, and then he started to hear huffing breaths coming from behind him, and then βΒ the painful thunk of something hard on the back of his head, and then nothing at all.
Paris will try to possess Matt whenever he can, to reunite with Bunny. Following this, Matt might sometimes wake up in the maze, disorientated and confused, unsure how he got there, and with a stomach ache that inevitability has him throwing up milky white, almost translucent bile.
Hopefully this helps, and if you have any returning questions, feel free to send them our way!
